Future for Ardan Nights?

Postby gforce99 » Thu May 10, 2007 12:39 pm

I was curious what ppl want out of AN. Is this just a friendly message board about Tolkien's work? Discussion based on LOTR Online? NWN2?

I would love to talk about ME in general, thats fine. But it would be cool if we could get back to where we were for customizing NWN..or NWN2.

Thoughts?

*grins*

Well, this is exactly what I want to hear from people.

I have lost a lot of the information that we used to have. From the files that I have, this backup from February 2003 was the latest I have of the Message Boards.

Some more topics would be accessible from the Web Archive, but only the public stuff. That goes as far as April 2005, which would be pretty much everything, there wasn't much activity after that date. It's a difference of 8579 posts and 365 users.

I don't seem to have a backup of the last iteration of the website which I am baffled by and really annoyed about. I was really happy with the way the website was.

What I do have though, is all the hak paks and files for NWN that we were working on. I believe I have a lot of the files that people had uploaded as well, so it is possible to start work if there is interest.

But I know that I don't have the time to get dug in to the trenches of what is a mammoth task.

I have not looked at NWN2 either, but I would imagine that they would not be compatible straight out of the box. Some of the stuff would work and other things would need to be updated.

I do believe that NWN2 is more customizable which was always interesting to us. The more we can change the better.

Just going through my old stuff and the following is the email I sent out following the "New Dawn" initiative. That was sent on 1st June 2004 and even by April 2005, there doesn't appear to have been much activity on the boards, which is more or less how I remember it.

Still the actual content and ideas may be of interest and use in any discussion of the future for AN.

Hail and well met all!

You are receiving this email because you at one time or another expressed
an interest in Ardan Nights (http://ardan-nights.org), whether that was by
becoming a member, registering on our message boards or signing up to our
mailing list. For this reason, some of you may receive this email more
than one, for which I apologise. If you do not wish to be emailed again,
please do let me know and I will remove you from the list. However, first
I would hope that you find out about the big changes happening at the
moment.

Over the last few weeks in the Hall of Fire, the current problems with
Ardan Nights were discussed and a solution was suggested and agreed to. We
are starting afresh. There is now a new, simpler structure and a
re-affirmation (with a slight change) in the direction and goal for Ardan
Nights. The PW is no longer a central goal for AN, a group of members can
if they wish continue this project, but it is no longer the core goal of
Ardan Nights. The central goal is to provide resources for modules to be
built and played. This restart does not mean that we start completely from
scratch, but rather we go over what we have done and fix what needs to be
fixed and document properly these new features.

The new structure has three tiers. There is the first tier of everybody in
general, be they members or not members, registered or not, who can post
to "General Discussion" and "Support and Help." Then there are the
members, who have been approved via application and who have access to the
members area of the website. This means they have access to the hak paks,
modules etc. that are and will be available. The last tier is really two
groups, the administration group and the workers group. The administration
group have the responsibility of looking after applications and answering
queries in "Support and Help" and moderating the boards. The workers group
itself is comprised of two seperate interests, the developers and the GMs.
The developers are those who work on customising NWN for AN. Their skills
are wide-ranging, including artists, modellers, scripters etc. The GMs
look after events to be held online and creating storylines, plots and the
like.

Now, some of you may be wondering, well what about modules?? Well, this is
where the members in general come in again. Members, who are not involved
in any other group, may be feeling left out at this stage, but you are the
lifeblood, the end product really. Members have the responsibilty of
creating modules using the stuff that the developers create, and providing
the GMs with somewhere to play out their plots. For this reason, many of
those involved in module building will have much communication with GMs
and may indeed be a GM him\herself.

This is early days once again for AN, and I think it is a very exciting
time. There is no longer a need for new members to feel overwhelmed with
the past lengthy discussions, but can start anew. I would ask you to come
have a look at Ardan Nights and see if you want to get involved.

May your mithril never tarnish,
Vildar.

Happily, I've found another old bag of bits and pieces. So at least I can see what the old site looked like and I found the archive of the *really* old stuff that I made. Which since then has disappeared from the web in any case! This goes back to the original Yahoo Group (2001) and the PlayerVault forums (2002).

A few month back I have found myself wondering what was that old board where I use to learn NWN scripting for a full Middle-Earth immersion.

I couldn't remember back then, now I guess I have my answer ;)

Hello everyone, I trully don't know if you remember me? It seem I hardly remember that period myself :D

While I was a bit idle, watching my children growing (I guess you can harldy said the world 'idle' in this situation), I did find myself another LOTR project to work for in the pass two years. it's an online LOTR wargame. I will talk about it later if some of you are intrested.

And no, I currently have neither the PC, the Will, the Time or the Money to play a mass multi-player game even one based on LOTR. But I am ok with that ;P

Hail Eriol Aelfwine! I certainly do remember you, your efforts in Gwaith-i-Mirdain were a breath of fresh air at the time.

I also must agree with you, that that time seems like a long time ago and much like a dream half remembered.

There seems to be a few more fathers around than there were in the past. I guess it's only to be expected and I imagine that 'idle' couldn't be further from the truth. :-D

Please do Eriol. If you could start a new topic about it, that'd be great.
